Harmony

Harmony is not what most people think it is.

It is not softness, forced positivity, or the absence of conflict. Harmony is the constant dance between dissonance and consonance, tension and resolution. It is what happens when differences weave together instead of clashing.

Music taught me this. Counterpoint, where independent lines each go their own way and form something none of them could form alone. Harmony is now the orienting principle for all that I do.

Music, insights and practices: different languages for this same universal pattern.

01 Music

Music to spark your soul. Music to awaken something inside you. Music as a lifeline to the present moment.

The right violin, at the right moment, for the right feeling.

I have built a career on being able to step into almost any music on the fly, find tasteful lines to support it, lift it to a new level, and make hearts soar. (I get this feedback almost every time.) Classical training gave me the instrument and technique. Improvisation showed me what I personally am meant to do with it.

Sensitivity makes the difference between playing over a piece of music and playing with it. That tastefulness is what makes people call me, for the studio and for the stage.

Music as a lifeline to presence

Most of us spend the day inside our own heads, mistaking our thoughts for the world and looping through them instead of hearing what is actually happening.

When I immerse my full attention in the sound I am making, that sound becomes like a center of gravity, and you are invited into it.

When a room full of people gets hit by the same sound at the same moment, it can grab them and pull them out of their own story, into the raw experience of hearing.

Shared presence. Here, now, outside the individual stories.

In Mayan symbolism, KAN is the glyph of abundance, fertility, maturation and harvest. Producing it felt like exactly that kind of maturation, and it brought me to a point of bearing musical fruit like never before.

The inspiration started in the Riviera Maya. I recorded all of it in Mexico City, in the first acoustically treated studio I built with my own hands. I composed every note, played every part, placed every microphone, recorded every element and mixed it. After a decade working alongside other people, this was the first full length work made completely alone, up to a professional production standard.

The soundtrack to a film you create within your own mind.

Listen straight through the full 105 minutes and let it take you on the journey, or go to the movement that makes you feel how you want to feel. Not quick listening. Deep listening.

02 Less Than Three 2020 Solo, live

14 Violin Live Loop Compositions. Each under 3 minutes. One continuous take. Beautiful locations in Mexico.

What you see is what you hear. No overdubs, no play along, no pre production. Just violin, effects, a loop pedal and the moment. These are not music videos, they are live performances captured on video.

The constraint came from a live television performance with two and a half minutes to make an impact. I planned how every loop layer would build and rehearsed it in my mind, and I loved the freedom of not needing to attempt anything more complex than can be put together live in less than three minutes. Limitations foster creativity, and freedom within them.

Then it sat at ninety percent complete for six years. Becoming a father clarified what mattered, and closing that loop mattered. Finishing it was never only about releasing more music. It was about becoming a person who finishes what he starts.

The live project

Samuel Wexler Samueltaneous

Samueltaneous is the live loop project, and Less Than Three is one specific body of work inside it. The project itself is a blank musical canvas, painted with a unique blend of sounds every iteration. No two performances are the same, and the goal is always to share something real, pure and alive with attentive listeners.

03 Mastodon with Cualli, 2023 Collaboration, studio

Neither of us could have imagined making music like this without the other person.

Cualli and I sat down together for every part of the process. Both of us generating musical ideas, both of us playing live instruments, each of us leaning into our own strengths and sharing the middle. Instrumental and electronic fusion, with parts that sound recognizably Cualli, parts that sound clearly like me, and parts neither of us can untangle.

04 Rain of Melody with Jocan Deka Collaboration, label release

Released through Buddha Bar. Currently my most streamed track.

A collaboration with Jocan Deka, released through Buddha Bar, with currently over 300,000 streams. It went out as the single preceding the Buddha Bar Beach ten year anniversary compilation, then again on the compilation itself, and it has held the top spot on my Spotify ever since.

02 Live

From massive festival stages to intimate circles.

Solo looping, ensemble collaboration and cross-cultural fusion. The room changes. The intention does not: build something in real time that people can actually feel.

04 Practices

An insight that stays only on the mental level misses the point. Harmony needs to be embodied, not just intellectualized.

The insights are in service of something larger: a real change in how you act, how you feel, how harmonious your internal experience is, and how harmoniously it interacts with the shared reality. The practices are where that integration happens. They draw from many fields, primarily yoga, meditation, breath work and martial arts.

05 Who I am

A violin arrived in my hands at nine, in Colorado. Classical training gave me the instrument. Improvisation turned out to be the real strength, and it sent me looking for what else the violin could do.

Electronica, jazz, manouche, Indian, bluegrass, soundtrack. One instrument was never going to be enough either, so I picked up most of the string family, and percussion. Then languages, as the doorways into different cultures and an exploration of consciousness. French, Spanish, Mandarin, German, each one a different way of organizing a root inspiration into a distinct thought. Being multi-instrumental and multilingual come from a similar instinct.

I have lived in Colorado, China and Mexico, and a life spent moving between cultures is in everything I make. I am a husband and a father. I try to share what is real and pure, whether it takes the form of music, words, motion or art, and I am honored to contribute my voice to the rich legacy of human music.

Another breath is never promised to me, so I want to contribute as much beauty, wisdom and love as possible while I am still here.
