Mine

Written, played and produced start to finish.

KAN, the square cover: the artwork mirrored into a mandala of ribbons, forest and sky.

01 KAN 2022 Solo, studio

A 105 minute journey, in six movements.

In Mayan symbolism, KAN is the glyph of abundance, fertility, maturation and harvest. Six movements, 105 minutes of genre defying music from the heart, for the heart. The first full length work I made completely alone, and the soundtrack to a film you create within your own mind.

Less Than Three, a collage of the fourteen video locations around the album title.

02 Less Than Three 2020 Solo, live

14 Violin Live Loop Compositions. Each under 3 minutes. One continuous take. Beautiful locations in Mexico.

What you see is what you hear. No overdubs, no play along, no pre production. Just violin, effects, a loop pedal and the moment. Then it sat at ninety percent complete for six years, and finishing it was about becoming a person who finishes what he starts.

Resistance is Futile album cover.

03 Resistance is Futile 2024 Solo, experimental

An experimental concept album: live violin at the center, AI electronica as the backdrop.

AI let me generate a wide range of tracks, then inject them with a ton of live instrument soul, flipping them into a violin-centric album. A cyborg album built on the Borg of Star Trek, down to the track titles, around one question: can we embrace the new power of being cyborgs, without being predatorily assimilated by the Borg, nor becoming part of its collective? Live violin and djembe carry all fifteen tracks, every voice on it is mine, and every cent of profit goes to charity.

Collaborations

Two people in a room, or across the world.

Collaborating with a wide variety of musicians was instrumental in discovering my unique musical voice.

One thing I have always loved about playing with different people is that I never really know what their music will inspire me to play, and I often discover new sides of my musical expression in each context.

For many years I would not only record with musicians in the studio, but also jump in with them spontaneously on live violin at music festivals and shows. We had a great time with the surprise of suddenly making music together, and I am so grateful to everyone who opened their stage to me.

This is how I learned the sensitivity to improvise with pretty much anything, and it was my primary form of authentic musical expression for many years, until I got organized and focused enough to bring my own 100% original music through to completion.

Mastodon with Cualli, 2023

Neither of us could have imagined making music like this without the other person.

Cualli and I sat down together for every part of the process. Both of us generating musical ideas, both of us playing live instruments, each of us leaning into our own strengths and sharing the middle. Instrumental and electronic fusion, with parts that sound recognizably Cualli, parts that sound clearly like me, and parts neither of us can untangle.

Buddha Bar Beach ten year anniversary compilation cover, featuring Rain of Melody.

Rain of Melody with Jocan Deka

Released through Buddha Bar. Currently my most streamed track.

A collaboration with Jocan Deka, released through Buddha Bar, with currently over 300,000 streams. It went out as the single preceding the Buddha Bar Beach ten year anniversary compilation, then again on the compilation itself, and it has held the top spot on my Spotify ever since.

The musician

The right violin, at the right moment, for the right feeling.

I have built a career on being able to step into almost any music on the fly, find tasteful lines to support it, lift it to a new level, and make hearts soar. (I wouldn't make this up. This is the feedback I consistently get.)

Classical training gave me the instrument and technique. Improvisation showed me what I personally am meant to do with it.

Sensitivity makes the difference between playing over a piece of music and playing with it. That tastefulness is what makes people call me, for the studio and for the stage.

Music as a lifeline to presence

Most of us spend the day inside our own heads, mistaking our thoughts for the world and looping through them instead of hearing what is actually happening.

When I immerse my full attention in the sound I am making, that sound becomes like a center of gravity, and you are invited into it.

When a room full of people gets hit by the same sound at the same moment, it can grab them and pull them out of their own story, into the raw experience of hearing.

Shared presence. Here, now, outside the individual stories.

The violin chose me

I could say I chose the violin, but really the violin chose me. It called to the deepest part of my soul and I just answered the call.

I am the instrument of the violin.

You could definitely say that the violin is my instrument, but I often feel more like I am the instrument of the violin.

The voice of the violin is transcendent of any one violinist and touches our hearts in a potent and healing way. I am honored to be the instrument this voice flows through.

The violin has only existed for a relatively short piece of human existence, and we have no idea what exactly the sound is doing to us, or what role it is playing in our evolution. I feel honored to be a part of its story.

Commissioned works

Music written for a place, a story, a purpose.

KAN began as a commission. Samuel Gordon, founder of KAN Tulum, asked for a soundtrack to play throughout the hotel and in its videos, and told me to make whatever I wanted, however I wanted to make it. It became a 105 minute journey in six movements.

Two more commissions are composed and on their way, releasing in the coming months.

Work with me

Three ways this usually starts.

Live

Performance and collaboration

Solo looping, ensemble work, ceremony, festivals and studio sessions. From massive stages to intimate circles, anywhere the music goes.

Sync and licensing

Music for picture

Ambient, electronic, orchestral, world fusion and soundtrack, most of it instrumental. KAN alone is 105 minutes written to carry a scene. I own every right to my own recordings, so licensing is one conversation, not five.

Commissions

Original music, written for you

If you are creating something that needs its own music, I would love to hear about it: a soundtrack for a space or a film, music for a brand or a ceremony. Tell me the feeling you are after.
